„The people have to talk to each other, about their thoughts, their feelings, about their educational intentions“ (Joseph Beuys)
Interflugs, the student-run initiative at the Berlin University of Art celebrates its 20th anniversary and invites everybody to Berlin-Neukölln to participate in the Effect//: Academy- the international interdisciplinary summeracademy on Campus Rütli!
Basis of the non-academic academy is a critical evaluation of the present state of art education and students self-conception. It is these topics that were of crucial interest to the founders of Interflugs 20 years ago. The ongoing institutional problems and student protests of that time gave birth to their self-organisation.
The old questions keep recurring and especially on the backdrop of the controversal Bologna-Reform they seem as actual as ever, calling for discussion and criticism: What is the relation between art education and the prevalent conception of „the artist“? How are education, production and distribution already subject to standardisation within the art studies, and in what way are intellectual independence and artistic work affected by institutional and normative procedures? Could non-academic and trans-disciplinary projects initiate a production and transfer of knowledge?
These and other questions will form the substructure of many workshops, lectures, screenings, discussion panels, participatory performances and urban interventions with international guests and artists.
Symposium:
The Interflugs celebration will kick off with the two day Defect //: Congress on July 18 in Festsaal Kreuzberg- the location of relentless recapitulation of the past activities and explosive release of ideas and visions for the future. On the list are: an Interflugs-Talk around the topics of academic/ art education and ist critical evaluation, a screening of documentaries on student protests, the exhibition „Nicht Annehmen“ with works of rejected UdK applicants (in the UdK main building in Hardenbergstr.33), and, finally, the warming-up party „Après-Flugs“ (July 18th) with MonoTekkToni (live), The Parabelles (live) and a hot DJ/VJ-set.
Summer Academy:
The Campus Rütli, a complex of schools and social institutions in Berlin-Neukölln, will be the host for our main event: the Effect //: Academy from July 23 till August 13, 2009. This „autonomous zone“ will be the basis for collective living, working, learning and celebrating, together with international guests and artists. The aim is to develop a practice of art education that encourages creative initiative free from institutional restrictions.
Like a UFO the Effect //:Academy will land in the neighbourhood often labelled as „socially difficult“. In actuality the place is filled with various cultural networks and projects. In cooperation with local kids, neighbours and institutions we would like to weave our artistic dialogue into this reality.

INTERFLUGS at the UdK BERLIN
Interflugs is the independently organised student initiative at Berlin University of Art (UdK). Founded in 1989 on the backdrop of student protests, Interflugs organises within its different sub-sections an independent and student-run form of education as an alternative to the class/teacher-based academic education and the artistic and cultural production at the UdK. The initiative is financed by the university but manages its budget autonomously from professors and faculties. Interflugs is run by student tutors in a democratic and non-hierarchical process.
