Hans Belting describes what happens inside the artist as the „purest" form of art. Now this process can be experienced directly! The fairy pays the UdK and you can „use" the artist for your ideas during the time agreed. In case you need any material in advance (projector, knives, washing liquid, etc) you shall let us know soon.

The picture shows the artist during his daily performance AWAKE ASLEEP. A work that materialised in various ways. In June this year the artist, in cooperation with the Museum for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, „switched" the Palace of Culture and Science on every morning when he got up and „switched" it off before going to sleep. This happenened through a code submitted via textmessage.

Filming, processing and projection will be our main focus, as well as methods and techniques of working with different cameras and material, so that all aspects of the production of film will be covered.

In work-in-progess-screenings we will discuss the wide-ranging modes of  applications of the medium film, participants can thus get involved in direct discussions with the group.

Reversal film, like slide positive film, can be directly projected after processing according to the technical guidelines. In this way it will be possible to reflect instantly on matters of experimentation, technical mistakes, and consequently rework the aesthetic and conceptual approach within a short time-span.

During a period of three days the Prinzessinnengarten at Moritzplatz will provide a forum for our theoretical and practical examination: the garden as a work space for the individual and the community, as an expression of society and politics, as a mirror of cultural aspirations, as a place for processes, learning and exchange.

The framework consists of personal ideas as well as the discourse about various aspects of “the garden”. On this basis, it is of interest to see which prospects for interdisciplinary collaboration emerge, as well as how interpersonal dynamics develop within and among a group. The place becomes a possibility – space will be offered for the formulation, drafting and construction of the ideas. Individual or collective concepts can be implemented using simple means in order to temporarily transform the area.

Q-CINE

Filming the crisis

Workshop, 04.08.-11.08. german / english

This workshop is fully booked!!!

Starting point of our video workshop will be the notion of„crisis":

Interflugs as institutionalised place of student self-management started out from a crisis, which fueled the student protests of 1989. The crisis as climax point, as road diversion, as threat to the status quo, and as a chance for a fresh start. The notion of the crisis was expanded to all areas of our life and is part of a modern mind set.

But havn`t we in the meantime reached the crisis of the crisis ? THE CRISIS is omnipresent and unrecognisable. Like a thick cloud of smog it floats above our heads and sinks down on us. What does it mean when the crisis has no end nor beginning any more ? How can we react towards a chronic crisis ?

One week for thought, filming, cutting, watching, talking and rediscussing. For the start of the workshop we will take a day to whatch and discuss films around our topic. Then we will individually approach it with the camera. We will support the participants with technical and contextual help as best as we can.

Easy to use technical equipment is available, though limited. Basic knowledge in film- and videoproduction will be helpful but not compulsory for participation.

We will be working towards a confrontational positioning of a notion of (self)organisation gearing towards Realism against present tendencies of aestheticisation of politics / romanticisation of politicality. The working group will pursue the production of writings that will then be made available for a wider public.

In 2008 the Free Class of the Städelschule in Frankfurt first worked on this theme:

Within this years summer academy the argumentation will be further explored.

Although it`s just as magical to reduce the thousand audiotracks that make up a song into one clean stereo track. BUT: The song stays as it is. No changes, no excuses, no extenuation, once the song is mixed..

I offer autodictatorial, psychological mentoring in finalising audio production, technical support in saying good bye to your song, or just answers to the ever-recurring questions. How many bit, how much bass, khz, stereoimage, loudness do you need to make your song sound beautiful anytime anywhere ? What do I need compressors, equalizer, analyzer, dithering or headphones for ? Do I need a 5th refrain or do I finish after minute 3.33 ?

Bring you computer, a sound card / interface (if available) and headphones!

Political, social, ecological contexts in Dirks work will be the basis for a spontaneous collaborative action, as second part of the workshop.

Governmentality and Self-Precarization -

On the normalization of cultural producers

Perhaps those who work creatively, these precarious cultural producers by design, are subjects that can be exploited so easily because they seem to bear their living and working conditions eternally due to the belief in their own freedom and autonomy, due to self-realization fantasies. In a neoliberal context they are exploitable to such an extreme that the State even presents them as role models. (I. Lorey, Virtuosos of freedom, 2008)

Dirk Fleischmann Artist Talk

Dirk Fleischmann's art projects relate to economic and ecological issues and take place over many years. His projects have taken the form of a diversified business enterprise: kiosks, trailer rental, chicken egg production, solar energy, a game show, virtual real estate, reforestation and a fashion label. Using business models as strategies to explore ostensibly well-known economic forms, Fleischmann inhabits these forms and participates in the same field as other corporations do. His quasi-entrepreneurial activities are experimental, fully functioning microscopic models which confront commercial mega-structures in a playful but critical way. His strategy is to create and present alternative conditions of service, trade or production as an attempt to regain with provisional means, at least for a short while, societal fields that seem to be completely occupied by conglomerates.

Dirk Fleischmann (*1974), is an artist based in Seoul, Manila and Frankfurt a.M. where he completed his studies at the Stäelschule art academy in 2002 and for 4 years he was the assistant to the director Daniel Birnbaum. In 2006 Fleischmann received a travel grant by the Hessische Kulturstiftung for research projects in Asia. Recently he was artist in residence at SSamzie Space, Seoul and Post-Museum, Singapore. Currently he is preparing for a special project as a virtual residency on ZKM Island in Second Life with the Royal Society Of The Arts / Arts & Ecology, London and the Centre for Art and Media (ZKM), Karlsruhe.

Dirk Fleischmann is teaching as a visiting professor at Hansung University in Seoul.

His work has been shown at Alternative Space Pool, Seoul (2007), Hebbel am Ufer, HAU 1 Berlin (2006), Museum of Modern Art Busan (2005), Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon (2004), Israeli Center of Digital Art Holon (2004), Museum Folkwang Essen (2003), MANIFESTA 4, Frankfurt a.M. (2002)
